Class 3 - Journey Round the World.

Walk around the local area.

This week, Year 3 and 4 put their map reading skills to the test. In Geography, we have been learning how to locate features on a map using 4-figure grid references. The children planned a route around the local area and on Tuesday morning we headed out, testing their ability to follow the route they had planned. The children were fantastic and enjoyed finding where they were on the map and pointing us in the right direction.

Invertebrate hunt

Year 3 have braved the cold this week and ventured out into the wildlife area searching for life. In science, Year 3 have learned that invertebrates make up more than 90% of all animal life and the children were keen to use their characteristic keys to identify and sketch some these creatures found in our local environment. Apart from the cold (and the occasional squeal caused by an invertebrate walking across a hand!) the children enjoyed the afternoon finding, spiders, slugs, snails, woodlice and earwigs and were able to use what they found to create their own classification keys when they returned to class.

Map skills

We have been learning about maps in Year 3 this week. The children have enjoyed looking at OS maps of the local area, learning about the symbols on the maps and looking for places they know. We have learned about the eight main points of a compass and found places in each direction from school. The whole class showed great enthusiasm throughout the activity and they are looking forward to learning more in the coming weeks!

Recorders

Class 3 have been enjoying learning to play the recorder this term. They have learned a number of songs and they are looking forward to the end of term concert where they can show the school and their parents what they have learned.

Journey round the world art.

We have been creating wonderful works of art in Class 3 this week. The children used their water colour painting skills to create a colourwash background, carefully blending one colour into another. On top of this they used their mark making and shading skills to colour the world. This has been inspired by the front cover of our theme book: "The boy who biked the world."

Welcome to Year 3.

The children have settled in well and they are enjoying this term's geography-based theme 'Journey round the world'. During the term, the children will learn about different continents and countries of the world, comparing their physical and human features. They will also learn about maps and how to read them. The children are enjoying the book: 'The boy who biked the world' by Alastair Humphreys. This is a fictionalised story based on the author's real-life bike ride the world and fits in well with our theme.
