Music
Welcome to Music at Bussage!
At Bussage, Music is more than learning songs—it’s about creativity, expression, and connection. Our creative approach to teaching and learning is designed to spark curiosity, inspire a love of Music, and help children understand the role music plays in their lives and the wider world.
Our vision: Our goal is to equip children with the skills to perform, compose, listen, and reflect. We encourage pupils to explore different musical styles, experiment with sound, and develop confidence in expressing themselves through music.
"Music is a universal language that connects us all."

What is a Musician?
At Bussage, we believe a Musician is someone who enjoys exploring and creating music. Learning about Music means developing the ability to listen carefully, perform confidently, and think creatively.
Musicians are curious—they explore sounds, experiment with rhythm and melody, and express their ideas through performance and composition. They learn to sing, play instruments, and work both independently and as part of a group.
They also listen thoughtfully, responding to music from different cultures, traditions, and time periods. Musicians reflect on what they hear and perform, building their understanding of how music is created and shared.
Being a musician also develops important personal qualities such as confidence, creativity, perseverance, and teamwork. It helps children to develop self-esteem and social skills while expressing themselves in meaningful ways.
At the heart of Music is enjoyment, creativity, and the opportunity to find your own musical voice.
Future Careers in Music
Studying Music opens the door to a wide range of exciting careers. The skills developed—such as creativity, collaboration, discipline, and confidence—are highly valued across many professions.
Young musicians may go on to become performers, composers, or music producers. Others might work as music teachers, sound engineers, or in media and entertainment industries. Careers can also include music therapy, arts management, and roles within the wider creative industries.
Music also supports careers beyond the arts, helping pupils develop communication, confidence, and teamwork skills that are valuable in any pathway.
At Bussage, we inspire children to explore music both for enjoyment so that they can confidently use it in everyday life and as a potential future passion or career.

Our core values in Music
The teaching of Music at Bussage is underpinned by our four cornerstones:
- Hope: Inspiring children to express themselves creatively and confidently through music and aspire to achieve their potential
- Wisdom: Developing understanding of musical concepts through listening, performing, and composing
- Community: Bringing people together through shared musical experiences, performances, and collaboration
- Dignity: Valuing all musical expression and showing respect for others’ contributions
By focusing on these values, we foster confidence, inclusivity, and a strong sense of belonging, ensuring that all pupils can achieve their full potential.
Join us on an exciting musical journey, where every lesson brings opportunities to create, perform, and enjoy the power of music.
Our Music Curriculum
At Bussage, our Music curriculum ensures progression of knowledge and skills, building on prior learning so that children develop as confident musicians. Music is taught weekly across the school and follows a carefully sequenced approach to support long-term progress.
We use the Charanga Music Curriculum alongside the Model Music Curriculum to deliver engaging and structured lessons across EYFS, Key Stage 1, and Key Stage 2.
Children learn through a practical, hands-on approach, including:
- Performance: Singing regularly in lessons, assemblies, and worship
- Composition: Creating and experimenting with music using instruments and technology
- Listening and Appraising: Exploring a wide range of music from different cultures and traditions
Each year group receives a period of instrumental teaching each year as part of their curriculum offer.
We want every child to leave our school feeling that they are a musician and with the knowledge that being a musician is something that they can take on into their life beyond Bussage C of E Primary School.
Music is also used beyond lessons to support wellbeing and enrich daily school life.
Enrichment and Opportunities
We provide a rich musical experience through:
- Whole-class instrumental teaching (e.g. recorders, clarinets, ukulele, djembe, PBuzz)
- Music technology (e.g. composing using GarageBand)

- Clubs and groups such as Young Voices choir and recorder club
