Design & Technology
Welcome to Design and Technology at Bussage! At Bussage Primary, we want all our children to explore their creativity through design. By thinking about the everyday products and environments around them, our pupils learn to solve problems, think critically, and use their imagination to tackle real-life challenges in exciting and practical ways.
What is a Designer?
At Bussage, we believe that being a designer means much more than just making something look good. A designer is someone who thinks creatively and imaginatively. They come up with ideas and solve problems. Designers aren’t afraid to take risks—they investigate, test, and improve their ideas. They also think carefully about what works and why, and how things could be made even better.
As Steve Jobs once said,
“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”
Future Careers in Design and Technology
Design and Technology can open the door to many exciting careers in the future. The skills you learn—like problem solving, creativity, and thinking critically—are used every day in a wide range of jobs.
You could become a product designer, creating useful items that improve people’s lives, or work in fashion, designing clothes and accessories. You might go into graphic design, creating logos and websites, or become an architect, planning and designing buildings and spaces. Some careers involve building robots, developing new technology, designing computer games, or creating new recipes as a chef or food technologist. You could even help people make healthy choices as a nutritionist.
At Bussage, we give you hands-on opportunities to design, test and improve your ideas. Through these experiences, we hope you’ll grow in confidence, enjoy the creative process, and understand how design plays an important role in shaping the world around us—and the world you’ll help shape in the future.
Our Core Values:
The teaching of Design and Technology at Bussage is underpinned by our four cornerstones:
Hope: We encourage children to design with a purpose, thinking about how their ideas can help build a better, more sustainable future for everyone.
Wisdom: Through hands-on projects, children learn to solve problems, make thoughtful decisions, and improve their designs by learning from mistakes.
Community: Pupils explore how different people and cultures have created and used technology, helping them to design with others in mind and appreciate a range of ideas.
Dignity: We celebrate every child’s creativity and encourage respect for different ways of thinking and working, helping them to see the value in everyone's contributions.
By focusing on these values, we prepare children for the next stages of their education, fostering a love for creativity, innovation, and practical learning. We aim to develop the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to become confident young designers and problem-solvers.
Join us on an inspiring journey of invention and creativity, where every project brings ideas to life and shapes the world around us.
Our DT Curriculum
Our Design and Technology curriculum is carefully planned around engaging themes. These themes help children build a deep understanding of the topic they’re exploring. As children move through the school, they revisit and build on previous learning, allowing their knowledge and skills to grow in a steady and connected way.
We bring DT to life by linking it to real-world situations and introducing children to famous designers from both the past and present. Through exciting case studies, pupils discover how design has shaped the world we live in. This helps them remember what they’ve learned and understand how design plays an important role in everyday life.
We want every child—no matter their starting point—to feel confident in learning new DT skills and knowledge. As part of their learning, they’ll use ideas from subjects such as maths, science, art, and computing. Along the way, they’ll learn how to take risks, be inventive, and think in creative ways. These are all skills that will help them not just in school, but also in life beyond Bussage.
